No Loss Of Senior Services at Local Centers
The South Shore of Staten Island has a large and vibrant community of seniors, many of whom take advantage of senior centers like the Friendship Clubs at Mount Loretto and Great Kills. When a misguided budget proposal threatened to cut funds to these organizations, Councilman Ignizio was one of the earliest critics who stood united with seniors around the city to oppose any reduction.
Thanks to the efforts of Ignizio and colleagues like Mid-Island Councilman James Oddo and Senior Services Committee Chairman James Vacca of the Bronx, the 2010 budget includes no cuts to senior centers. These centers are not only important for entertainment, but many residents receive a daily lunch, as well as exercise and cultural programs that would not exist without the resources the Department for the Aging provides. To supplement the cost of some of the additional programs at these clubs, Councilman Ignizio has secured $40,000, which will be split between Mount Loretto and Great Kills.
For anyone interested in becoming a member of these organizations, they should call the Friendship Club’s main office at (718) 356-5050.
